The Challenge

This project tasked us with creating a fictional airline brand from the ground up. Beyond developing a name and visual identity, the challenge was to craft a system that could capture the bold, legendary persona of Blackbeard while appealing to a modern travel audience. The identity needed to balance historical references with contemporary airline design, ensuring both adventurous spirit and credibility.

The Solution

We built a complete visual identity system for Blackbeard Airways, featuring: A primary logomark consisting of pirate iconography and depicting the famous pirate Blackbeard; Bold color palette for fearlessness; Gothic typography that accompanies the logomark, envoking feelings of seriousness while staying professional. The result is a conceptual identity that positions Blackbeard Airways as both fearless and welcoming, celebrating Caribbean culture and the spirit of exploration.

The Approach

The process began with research into the Golden Age of Piracy and the legendary figure of Blackbeard. From this, we defined brand traits of boldness, authority, charisma, and loyalty to guide the design system. Initial sketch explorations experimented with pirate-inspired motifs before narrowing into a refined logo suite.

Typography exploration combined Gothic styles to nod to history with clean modern fonts for usability. The color palette was chosen to capture both the richness of the Caribbean and the strength of Blackbeard’s persona. Finally, we extended the system into brand applications — from airplane decals and uniforms to boarding passes and web touchpoints — demonstrating how the identity could scale into a fully realized airline experience.
